This is from my family, I think either my Grandma or her sister, my great aunt. I just know as soon as we had a sore throat, this was served up and it always felt good and tasted good.
- juice of one lemon
- 1-2 Tbs of honey
- hot water to fill the mug
Stir it all together and drink slowly. It makes your throat feel good and fills you with a good dose of vitamin C. We have 2 lemon trees and almost always have ripe lemons through the winter so this is our first defense.

I’ve stopped drinking coffee for a bit. It’s too hot and it was bothering my stomach. But I still want something to sip in the morning before I sit down for breakfast. On cooler mornings a cup of tea does the trick, but lately it’s been too hot to want anything warm to drink. I’ve switched over to making a sweet lassi. Sometimes I’ll make a large one and that’s all I need for breakfast, but usually I just want a little something to tide me over while I read a bit, put away dishes, and check my email. Then I’ll fix some toast and sliced tomatoes or a scrambled egg or something. If I keep doing this reguarly, I’ll get back into my yogurt making habit too.
For a smallish lassi:
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup ice water
- some ice
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- a dash of salt
- a sprinkle of rosewater (optional, but a nice touch if you can find some)
Blend all this in a blender, then drink. For me, it’s got a perfect balance of tartness and sweetness. It would also make a nice afternoon pick-me-up.

I am blessed with two lemon trees and we are in the prime of lemons right now! Despite the harsh winter, the trees and fruit survived. Our oranges are about done, so now we are onto lemons! You can, of course, just squeeze some lemons and add some sugar and water and have decent lemonade. But I find the sugar doesn’t dissolve well in the cold water. If you make a simple sugar syrup instead, it’s much better!
Bring this to a slow simmer and stir until the sugar is dissolved, then cool.
- 1 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1 quart cold water
Meanwhile squeeze enough lemons to get about 1 cup of lemon juice or a bit more if you like it a bit tart like we do. Add 1 quart or so of cold water and some ice to the lemon juice. Stir together.
My youngest added half a fresh squeezed orange to her glass and loved the combo. We’ve got just a dozen or so oranges left on the tree.

I’ve gone off coffee somehow, but I still want something to drink in the mornings. This morning I made a yogurt drink, made from my second batch of homemade yogurt. It was delicious!
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup ice water
1/2 cup crushed ice or ice cubes
1 tsp or so of sugar, to taste
Mix this all up in your blender. Mmmmmmm….like a smoothie but without the sweetness of the fruit.
